Maybe it's 'cause the Axis players aren't a bunch of forum crybabies, and they keep their cool and fight the uphill battle, unlike some of their "allied" counterparts.

At the final stages of the alpha they were nerfed to a 3 man squad with limited combat capabilities. They are used to decap enemy points and quickly GTFO of dodge.

More like redesigned. The unit Barton mentioned still exists in the game under Ostheers unit list. The one you can get in-game is a 4 man squad with sprint that can cap, haven't tested their fighting ability. Overall seems redundant though, OKW has.. literally every infantry squad, that can already do that.
