The Trouble With Shooters

I'm wondering if anyone else has started to have a hankering again for a good WW2 shooter. It's been almost a decade since a good WW2 shooter has been released.

Looking around though I've seen tons of articles/posts on how "over done WW2 was last-gen". True, totally agree, from about 2000-2007 there was either a Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, Battlefield, or Brothers in arms game being released - often in the same year. Now from 2006-2012ish everything was modern, present day etc. And in the last few years everything is science fiction/future.

What is the deal with this? Each major shooter developer seems obsessed with keeping up with the trend. Wouldn't it be great if rather than saturating the market with the same era of game there were different developers producing a different era? All those posts about "over done WW2" are correct, but I feel like we've over done "future/sci fi" now...

I wish they'd diversify the shooter industry a little bit more. Frankly I could care less if the next big shooter has a jet-pack or not. What would be cool is a WW2 game with a bit of an open world feel, or just a really good solid intense level based shooter.

Also, I wouldn't mind some more exploration into Vietnam/WW1. Definitely some interesting possibilities there. Vietnam would be a great platform for an open world single player map.And I really am SMH at COD. Up until MW2 their games were awesome. Then they took a really bad turn towards MP(and crappy MP at that) and endless expensive micro transactions and DLCs and have done nothing but modern/sci-fi since. A WW1 CoD game could be very very interesting if done properly. Especially if it was released in 2017, like a 100 year tribute to USA entering WW1.

The mainstream is all modern/futuristic combat, but we have decent games about the great wars.

Edit:
You won't see a CoD in WW1 because the combat in that era was slow paced with probably insane recoil. CoD has 2 trademarks: fast paced, almost zero recoil.

Theres Verdun thats a WW1 shooter I never bought it though cause I dont like the idea of camping in a trench all day, there was also Red Orchestra 2 thats like the last ww2 shooter I ever bought and its pretty good but the playerbase is pretty small and the game is hard to play if you're new as you'll die alot because of the realism which is pretty unforgiving and the amount of times I have been killed or killed someone on my own team because you're always on edge when playing that game.

But to be honest the best WW2 shooter I probably ever played was Call of Duty World at War, when it came out it had so much to offer compared to the other call of duty games that came out after it, you had a well designed and fun to play campaign that you can do with 3 of your friends and if you really like co-op you then had the Zombies mode you could play then the multiplayer was fun and not that unbalanced compared to the others and there wasnt those annoying killstreaks that ruined the game for the opposing team I always hated the nukes and those player controlled helicopters (all it did was force the enemy team to hide in buildings)

Also did anyone ever play BF Bad Company Vietnam http://store.steampowered.com/app/242860/

CoD 1 had pretty good recoil though, nothing to big, nothing to little.

The list he names is good, solid, should check it out mate!

Those games aren't exactly showcasing the graphics possible now... interesting, but not quite what I'm going for.

Also, I the typical thoughts about WW1 are far overshadowed by the western front... which is why we think of WW1 as static. But there were other fronts much faster moving.

What I would think for WW1 is you could follow the story path of (CoD style experience) of 3-4 different soliders: A German on the eastern front 1915-17, an ANZAC in the middle east, an American on the western front 1918...
