The problem with going right on that map is you risk facing no resistance. Then the team who abandoned the forest wins a 4v3 on the rest of the map. After the initial battle is won they can take a minute to blob the forest and get the munitions back easily, so the forest opening works out to be pointless if this happens.
You did seem fairly pro-active moving up to help but unfortunately the team-mates had lost many units by then. Not your fault but the teams were heavily unmatched anyway.
By the way if you have trouble clicking units try the unit cards in the top right. I find it impossible to select the tiny moving icons accurately, and I'm mentioning it because there were plenty of times you couldn't retreat one squad in time and then gave up and mass retreated all the full health squads. On these huge maps a false retreat is like a loss because it's then hard to win any other engagements.
