I think there's a slight different. You approach things from a different design view while this is a specific change aimed toward a specific balance change.

You could give all 3 a flame barrage/plane which would still fill a certain degree of offmap support but it would not obliterate howitzers, infantry/support weapons nor vehicles.

IL-2 is not simply an arty counter it is also a Heavy tank killer combined with ram.
Both coh2db and the updated site have the StG 44 DPS at far range at a much lower value (1.054 at range 35) and the G43's slightly higher (4.1), meaning that the G43s would have a huge long range advantage over the StG 44. They also have the G43 at slightly higher close range DPS (13.2), which would further decrease the gap in close to mid range performance.
Numbers, I provided are from weapons report at range 0/10/20/30.
How about a little extra range such a 40 from 35? This could make them able support other units who draw fire rather then fight for themselves?

Yes that could be an option. These unit thou should focus more on the utility of providing sight and less on dealing damage and serve more like support utility units.
Tbh, the m20 is fine, maybe give it armored skirts straight off the bat and reduce mp cost a lil bit for better timing. but even then i find its pretty decent. Just comes down to how well you can micro it.
Although I mostly agree I have to point that:
The M20 already has more armor than vehicles of its timing even without skirt.
There is little reason to make almost immune to small arm so early. It can already stand in front of unvetted HMG and force a retreat.
What? lol How is it an investment? You are going to tech, you don't have to side tech, thats the point. You dont delay tech by unlocking grenades, you unlock grenades by teching.

Things that have tech cost are not free. One has to invest resources unlock them and thus has less field presence.

The argument that axis have advantage because of their tech does not hold water. Ostheer have linear tech tree the combines both researching and have to build structures and OKW have one of the rigid tech structure making difficult to back tech and have a full roster.
"Side tech" give player the choice of "if and when" to unlock a item and usually the option for earlier access and the chance to swing the very important early engagements, thus comes with a cost.
I think it comes down to the squad's role. If you intend the squad to be trading fire against entrenched opponents then obviously this is going to be problematic. But you really shouldn't be using stormtroopers like this.
Not really. The DPS of drop off of 4 men squads is simply to high.
I'd also be very curious to see your stormtrooper losing to conscript scenario. I feel like the only way this is going to happen is if unstealthed stormtroopers are charging conscripts in cover.
I have seen it happen due to poor RNG (it no very probable), the conscripts got lucky and drop a model fast then ST had to retreat after losing a second model or risk death on retreat.
Again the high DPS weapons do not work well with 4 men squad especially with CQB squads where one will suffer loses. Having concentrated DPS in 1-2 weapons work better.
Same goes for squad with lots of entities. ST44 VG are prime example of this.
