Imo suppression is not everything for mg.
Maxim have superb pack up times vs axis mg.
When i play usf, everytime i spot mg42 packing up, i know it is doom. It is so slow, i will just rush in left right with 2 squads to either force retreat or decrew it.
Increasing maxim suppression will make it very very hard to counter. Wehr grens need to stay still to shoot. They are very hard to flank mg. Pack up move further back reposition and Grens are fuckeed.
Then use rifle grenades from green cover (where a maxim will struggle to ever suppress you) which have the longest range or any grenade
Or
Sprint in ass grens or G43 grens
You trying to use a unit at something it is awful at is not a balance consideration.
A maxim being a bad machine gun is absolutely everything that matters about it. If the maxim needs a longer setup time to make it work as an MG, so be it. The quick teardown is sadly mandatory because deathloop, so enjoy the fact that the MG42 magically teleports between models when retreating. |
While we're at it, garands are too strong too, so we'll just remove them as well. All riflemen will be armed exclusively with pineapple grenades (locked behind sidetech of course).
But we're upping their minimum range, and reducing their maximum, to better reward skillful micro.
USF pineapples now only available to be thrown between 11.5 and 12.25 range.
Back on topic, it's more expensive than the alternatives and moving it loses the main source of firepower it has. It's fine. |
Nobody is pointing out how durable the maxims are in a discussion about squads for the soviet union because every single one of their squads is 6 men.
It's the soviets. That's what they do. Like USF repair crews and OKW's 5 levels of vet, it's absolutely meaningless to point it out. Everyone knows and it's just not relevent.
The maxim still can't function as a machine gun without doing its job WITHOUT a vet 1 ability. Never mind giving it a light vehicle shredding turbo vet 1, just make it actually suppress and damage be damned.
|
Well, there you have it. MrGame is the one who thinks the MG42 needs buffs. Thread over, folks, bait successful.
They also want to give the maxim more damage again, which tells me basically everything I need to know about how little I regard their proposals.
Once more for the folks in the back:
MGs are supposed to suppress infantry
Damage is not what they're for
Quick moving high damage maxims are what made them spammable in the first place - at the time they were just superior to conscripts
Never again |
if balanced correctly theoredically that'd help a bit, but the problem is also flame weapons like the flametrack, hetzer, and more commonly the volks incin grenade. RA bonus doesn't help vs these weapons at all and are heavy culprits for forcing deathloop.
Okay so
What if
Because the maxim is water cooled
We gave them the 'standing in water' flame damage reduction at all times. |
Land Mattress.
Make the barrage make a loud noise when you activate it, make it lengthy and give it a wide barrage radius. The opponent has time to react, but their team weapons are screwed if they stay put.
I think making it 45 FU and balancing it accordingly is a good route to take, personally.
See, the problem there will be with absolutely absurd animations.
The land mattress fires a scatter of several rounds every second to achieve the sort of area saturation needed to justify its cost.
That's not something the single tube pack howitzer can replicate. |
The problem with trying to make a small field arty piece is twofold.
A - that sort of indirect firepower is normally tied to commanders, which allows a certain amount of expectation and counterplay.
B - Howitzers rely on huge shell AoE and area saturation to do damage. Unless you want to severely buff the Pack Howitzer and add a fuel cost, a half size barrage is going to be awful, one way or another.
If the barrage is free, but as good as a ZiS barrage, it'll be crippling to play against.
If it's free and more or less any worse, it'll be worthless against anything besides an OKW truck, because squads can just move, it'll never vet up, and the shells won't have the AoE and spread to be a general sector threat to stand in like an ML-20 or LeFH.
I can't see any middle ground where a 300-400mp howitzer could ever be a good idea. Where the hell is that sweet spot?
Saying make it a barrage is fine, but how? What would the shell spread be, what would the reload be, how big is each shell AoE? |
Can we just make maxims actually suppress but make them set up slower?
The tear down time can stay to help avoid the death loop atrocity (a little), but making the maxim actually do its job without needing vet 1 and a timed ability every time would be great
Compared to the MG42s timed vet 1 ability, which shreds every light vehicle in the game. Because reasons. |
Its confirmation bias.
All retreating inf get the same modifier. |
I wouldn't mind if they came with T1, the same way that panzerfausts for Ostruppen do, to be honest. |
