Purpose of Thompson vehicle crews

In the USA armored commander, there is strange option to upgrade vehicle crews with thompsons. It was clearly put in there for a reason, but probably a really niche one.

Well as goofy of an upgrade as it is, You can make good use of them by replacing your regular crews with rear echelons. This will allow them to get more experiance while using a vet two to three crew running about with the thompson upgrade

For 90 munitions on a weak squad that's sole purpose is to repair and be inside tanks I feel it's a useless upgrade most of the time.

It should be made passive, even then it wouldn't be that good, but it'd be something.

You can't upgrade the bazooka crew I don't think.

What I found is that these units have very low target priority so if you are in an engagement with rifles support the crew can walk up and massacre. They do insane damage. Of course if your opponent targets your crew then they will die very fast.

You might be able to use them in vehicles to circle around paks and hop out, I think they will kill the gunners before they can turn around. Very situational of course, better get a MG on the sherman, HE shells dont work at all.

If you have thompson crew running around as infantry (you replaced them with RE), then they should be good at repairing support weapons I suppose.

Correct, I edited the OP. The Utility car crew cannot mount the tommy.

The ability comes from the start. I believe then, it is designed so that light vehicles get their crews replaced with rear echelon. Then the crews get used as SMG infantry for early/mid game.

Once T4 is unlocked, the vetted crews are then re-inserted into the tanks.

It basically gives you sturmpios.

I think the thompson's are overpriced at 90 munitions though.

It's pretty useless. It should be free or swap it with something more useful.

To use it with crews in the early game or mid that would leave you with getting the AA HT or getting Stuarts. As mentioned before the M20 crew can not be upgrade to tommy guns due to them having a bazooka.

A viable way of using this is going for multiple Stuarts and using the crews to get vet and having them crew M10s or Sherman dozers or a Jackson as they come into play.

What I have done is swapped out the crew of my M20 for the crew of a M80 or Sherman when they come out of my T4 and use the unvetted guys in the M20 to harass and if I'm floating on muni give them Tommy's and have them get on top of lone okw or wehr squads and hop out to try and get a squad.

For 90 munis I could of dropped some mines from my M20 which insta kill light armor and get mobility damage to med to heavy tanks.

You could allow veteran vehicle training for only vehicle crews like the tiger ace doct can do for all their units but I think this change would get a lot of complaints.

I've used Sturmpios and I've used Thompson'd Crews. They don't even begin to compare. The durability on the crews is balls. Which is fine, they're a vehicle crew, not shock infantry. Which is why I deem this upgrade pretty much a useless purchase. I've tried the Rear Echelon swap "trick" and I frankly found it underwhelming.

They should probably replace it with something useful, like an upgrade for the Assault Engineers or Riflemen.

Heh another possible swap for it is increased vehicle crew survivability training, once it's unlocked it guarantees the vehicles crew survival after their track was destroyed allowing you to save the crew and retreat them before they got cut down by small arms fire or canon shots. I would make the assumption that US tank crews knew how to get out of their vehicles very quickly due to their lack of armor protection and that they could become giant burning hulks in a matter of minutes.

Either way the tommy gun upgrade impact in a game are almost zero.

They're stronger than rear echelon squads but the durability of the vehicle crews are so bad it's not worth it most of the time.

I actually thought it was passive. Which would have been good.

If anything, the ability should unlock a Thompson weapon rack in place of the LMG that's normally only for the Infantry commander and otherwise entirely useless. This third "doctrinal" weapon rack would serve the purpose of being able to outfit your troops with whatever third weapon a doctrine allows. The only other doctrine besides Infantry that uses LMG are paratroopers' LMG upgrade, which is not dependent on the rack anyways.

For 60 or even 90 munitions you can turn every weapon slot-free unit you got into a Sturmpionier.

This is an issue that was raised early on in the Alpha and has been queried sporadically since. I think it's a logical idea, but it's fairly useless overall and seems more of a waste of an ability slot rather than something that's broken or unbalanced.

Hopefully it can be looked at in the future. I suppose it's one of those things that will never be a priority, though.

Is it useful to help the crews vet up a bit? I've never used it so I dunno.

90 munitions is too much whatever the case.

I think this idea or making the ability passive.
