Seems Relic has abandoned custom commanders. But Stahp_Tank on reddit was nice enough to share what could have been.

this would be so amazing or so game breaking

a lot of abillites and units that would never be used... unless the would put some of them together

as it looks on the photo you would be able to use only the custom commander in automatch

I hope they never do this, it would just lead to a single meta-commander build that every single player uses.

Pretty much this.

In any game that allows you for sandboxy customization of your skills/abilities/armies it always boils down to a single IWIN build which you are punished for not using.

Also, I'm quite sure this screenshot alone is one huge NDA breach.
Keep it up guys and we might not get involved in any development process outside of balance mod previews.

we know they considered the idea (they said so) but i didn't realize it ever made it out of in house concepting.

Since i prefer matchmaking over custom games.

I gardening hope that its not only for custom games, like the skins but can't use them in mm either. ( but he use x skin, yea yea just report them like everywhere else / or i don't like it, you can turn custom stuff off option )

Or they would fix/balance all commander abilities viable and we could have a wide selection of fun.

I sure hope they didn't abandon it. I think the OP may be jumping to conclusions a bit too early.

Not the Wargame series, which literally let you design your entire army from 2000 units.

I somehow doubt custom commanders would be ultra meta-centralizing.
For example, Fox is the best character in Melee. He has all the right tools for every situation, yet the other top few characters consistently place high / win big tourneys. Why?

Each ability has advantage and disadvantage. While SCAS would be nice, I imagine just as many doctrines would include Tigers or some other form of cheese. SCAS isn't applicable to all situations as much as another ability might be.

The mentality of "giving the players power results in boring play / meta" is dumb, and very restrictive on design. It also indicates lack of imagination, lack of enthusiasm, a harsh and unrealistic cynicism, and so on. That's a poor design philosophy.
Developers must have humility and realize they can't and shouldn't try to control things so thoroughly if they want good design.
What does it say when a developer doesn't trust their customers?

Rather, balance each ability according to the metas that would emerge. It's possible.
The only acceptable objection is the interim which might be bad balance would kill the game's playerbase. We might not make it to the final state, which is superior.

I mean it definitely wouldn't work in this form. To work it would need to have some limitation of what abilities can be used. Like only being able to choose one call in tank.
