Enjoyable back and forth game on Nexus.

Ty for the clarification on mines. Regarding AOE my point is with a smaller model unit you are more likely to lose it due to clumping or if you take your eye off of them. I don't think it requires adjusting, but in a faction with combined arms that takes a lot of concentration and is unforgiving which can frustrate players.
Re the building cost, I did not know that either but I think the point stands. If you can use those resources on doctrinal infantry instead and get a quicker T1 unit that is something players will often opt for.
I like the combined arms nature of Ost myself as I prefer defensive positioning play and having a wide arrange of tools available from T0-T1. However at the moment brute force doctrinal troops into quick T1 is easier to use imo.

I think Grens are likely fine but four model squads is very unforgiving as they squads can get wiped due to clumping from mines and AOE weapons. Hence why a lot of players are going Ostruppen as a frontline screen into PGrens and Scout Car who deal the damage as it is more forgiving and easier to play.
Also Grens require the T0 building that costs a enough to matter in early game. Most players aren't regularly using Sniper/Mortar.
If I do go Grens - I use combined arms of MG42, Grens, Sniper and then T1 stuff like Scout Car/Pgren/Pak 40. It is not an easy style to play in my opinion as one mistake can hamstring you badly.

I'd start off by saying that no one is really a pro in COH2 as I don't think anyone to my knowledge is making enough money off of it to play as a job. I'd also point out that a lot of the top players have put in a hefty amount of hours into the game which you may not have time to do/want to do.
As for general tips. Well I am not a top player or anywhere close. Bang average to decent depending on the day, moon phase and caffeine levels. I used to be top 50 in a bunch of factions on the ladder and even then, was a big difference between that and the top tournament players.
In general I would say though that 1's is the best practice and focusing on one-two factions. Playing to your natural inclinations like defense/offence is probably a good idea. For example my micro is okay but nothing special and I will against better players attempt to slow down the game by playing defensive as that is where I am comfortable and can rely on positioning more then outright micro.
Knowing common strats and the maps are necessary. You get that from reps. You get better by learning from games and developing good habits.

COH2 1v1 map pool has had some real unfortunate inclusions in its time like Stalingrad, road to Kharkov and Minsk pocket.
I find using vetos I am getting more games now on the likes of crossroads (both versions), faymonville and Ferma which I all enjoy.

I’d like to say like a fine beverage I age well, but this blast from the past is more jaded and..oh wait that never changed. Hello to you too and any other old deck hands floating around.

With Covid-19 in swing I started playing again after a decent few years out of the loop. Game is changed but I still enjoy it for the most part bar that it still has a memory leak and the odd bug splat. Still not a massive fan of the USF, OKW or Brits designs as I think they were inherently flawed from the get go.
Soviets and Ost feel like nice rounded factions and the map pool for 1v1 has improved.
I don’t expect to be thrashing people anymore as my game time is limited as I’m no longer a student but I do find with correct positioning and some tactical sense you can get around having an average micro ability. The top players tend to play a ton of hours so I don’t expect to be reaching that level.
In any case relic won’t be doing any major changes at this point. DOW2 is my favourite RTS but for games still with life, COH2 is good fun (most of the time).

Leaving aside the comparison between storms and partisans who are getting trial changes to make them more viable, it's hard to judge until we test it.
Storms which haven't changed for a long time, thus we can make an informed opinion about, are a bit meh, in a doctrine made of meh. Aside from sprint on the ost sniper it does not have too much going for it in 1's.
Grens come earlier then storms, cheaper reinforce and a better AI upgrade, Faust and arguably better nade. Pgrens can do much the same as storms, except they trade manpower efficiency with a higher reinforcement cost, for not needing a very costly AI upgrade to perform. AT wise, Pgrens come out ahead. If you want to replicate the camo, you can get that from better commanders. The ambush camo on Pgrens is actually good as the damage/now changed to accuracy bonus lasts for 5 seconds, which close up on a burst damage platform like Pgrens works much the same as storms, except you save a crap ton of munitions. Timing wise, both units come roughly at the same time. Storms don't need tier 2, but realistically 90+% of the time as ostheer, you need that tier anyways.
And munitions for ostheer can be better spent on lmgs/g43's which will make your army far more manpower efficient then any gains you get from a reduced reinforcement cost for storms in comparison to Pgrens.
So in short, storms could do with some love. They aren't terrible, but neither are they on par with grens/Pgrens IMO.
