The resource display still sucks. It occupies too much horizontal space, you can't take in your entire resource situation at a single glance. Instead, you have to pan your eyes across a rather large area.
The compact layout of the resource display in vCoH is much more user-friendly. |
I think that when you have to play BO1 games in tournaments you need mirror matches, or the game will always be unfair and favour the player who picks faction first. An example of this is how all the BO1 games during SNF quali tourneys went, the high majority of them ended with the players picking faction first being also the winners.
This is terribly wrong, and a terrible approach. BO1 has no place in competitive play, ever. Doesn't matter if you have mirrors or not, BO1 is absolutely, incredibly terrible for competition. |
Fucken Braves fan... |
Arguing that mirrors will magically make the game more competitive is silly. Good mirrors will make the game more competitive; bad mirrors, on the other hand, will drive players away.
If Relic can design factions that lend themselves to interesting and dynamic mirror matches, then mirrors should be in the game. If they can't, then mirrors shouldn't be added either.
Outside of some quasi-marketing arguments (which nobody here can make since nobody here has access to THQ's marketing and focus group materials), it comes down to pure gameplay. And because we can't discuss specifics of gameplay on these forums, any arguments one way or the other are completely baseless. |
I'd be interested. You have me on Xfire I think. |
Yeah, it would definitely be interesting. It's tough to talk about without citing gameplay. |
Arguing for mirrors by saying they're essential to making the game competitive is as silly as arguing against them because they make the game less realistic. If mirrors are fun to watch and varied in gameplay, they should be included. If they aren't, they shouldn't.
SC2 isn't competitive because it has mirrors; it's competitive because it has the right mix of balance, skill ceiling, and visual appeal. The winner is generally the player who played better, it takes a lot of effort to excel at, and people want to watch it.
Most people I know who watch/play SC2 prefer asymmetrical matchups over mirrors by a huge margin. They aren't necessary, but they can add variety to a game if done well, especially a game like CoH2 which would have one matchup otherwise.
Of course, we've only had two days to play with CoH2, and nobody has any idea whatsoever if mirrors are fun to play or fun to watch. Only time will tell. |
It's impossible to say if mirror matches are good or not because without reference to actual gameplay all we're doing is throwing around unfounded opinions. And since we can't discuss specifics of gameplay here, there's no debate to be had. |
It makes sense to subdivide the beta community for the purposes of discussion. The two communities will provide distinctly different feedback. The official forum will be completely useless for purposes of discussing balance and game mechanic issues. |
