I think its the case of the pak40 shooting the ambulance from a mile away.
The panther was aiming at the m1919 riflemen in its sight, and it missed and somehow hit the sherman.

yeah, it's scatter. it fired at something, missed it and the shot kept going, rolling to hit for things behind since it was too high to hit the ground. very rare but it does happen. not technically a bug but it can definitely a problem.

As others have said, it's because it was a stray shot, not because it aimed at the Sherman. Missed shots scatter toward the ground at a low angle, but in rare cases the angle is too shallow and the ground is at a decline, which means the shell never touches the ground and just keeps going until it does hit something.
