Anything can seem plausible if you don't know a lot about the subject. Nuclear Meltdowns causing an explosion like an Atom Bomb seemed plausible to me until learned how they really work.
Side-Note: A Meltdown is actually exactly what it sounds like; the fuel rods melt, which releases high levels of radiation, but there is no nuclear explosions.
