The Kubel's shorter range gave allied units just enough distance to be able to damage the kubel. Sure, they'd still get pinned, but the kubel would take a worthy enough damage to require repairs.
By the time any allied unit reaches the threshold of the kubel's old range, they are already pinned.
What used to be the first burst of fire now equates to a pinned squad.
That's an incredibly huge difference.

Overall i think the prepatch kubel was fine, yes it wasn't the best thing ever, but it had more to do with the pathing than anything else.
Also, the kubel vet 1 ability is a maphack which helps it scale very well into the late game

Kubel isn't OP anymore.
It is, especially given the current state of bazookas and the possibility of truckpushing.
40 range is a huge buff compared to 35, the smaller fire arc doesn't matter at all.
If you think it's bad, try dealing with flamer HT as OKW.
The Russian M3 dies very easily to small arms fire and doesn't reliably win a 1 on 1 against a Kübel.
The American mechanised halftrack has incredibly low health and armor. By the time it comes out, one Schreck is more than enough to deal with it.
For the sake of completeness, the M20 does quickly kill the Kübel, but becomes prey to the Puma afterwards.

I would like to see the Kubel go back to the original stats (maybe with a slight health buff) and better pathing, I think it would probably work out okay.
The issue before was that units that were suppressed were still killing the Kubel or causing it big damage, meaning it would have to retreat anyway and then tie up the Sturm squad to repair it, or it would get killed by even a Rear Echelon unit that managed to flank it.
