You probably do something horribly wrong then, like putting it on hold fire and forgetting it exists or something.
Maybe it's 'cause the Axis players aren't a bunch of forum crybabies, and they keep their cool and fight the uphill battle, unlike some of their "allied" counterparts.

One thing I noticed is that the crew on that thing seems superhuman. I once cornered one and it took my Shocks a good while to decrew it; Conscripts barely even scratched them even at close range. I'm not certain if they actually are tougher than regular crews, but somehow they seem so.

Mortars do not have accuracy against moving targets. They fire at a single center point (usually a model in a squad) and the spread determines the accuracy. It does not compensate for movement and the projectile does not follow infantry.
Yeah, I know. Perhaps I should have said "ability to hit moving targets" instead of "accuracy against moving targets". But either way, it is pretty effective at hitting men on the approach. Blob or no blob.
