Everyone pretty much hated royal artillery. Getting blown up all game long is not fun, it's a horrible nightmare. Remember creeping barrage? Ugh.
The 88 has basically just been replaced with the pak 43, and you see it every now and then.
Most indirect fire is now mortars or light artillery (scott, pack howitzer, infantry support gun, etc), so you can use it to break through machine guns and bunkers but you can't smash an entire army with it.
I think this is an intentional design decision, and I like it.
