On September the 2nd year 1945, aboard the deck of the American battleship USS Missouri the act of unconditional surrender of Japan was signed. That meant the end of the the most large-scale war in human history that was fought in Europe, Asia and Africa; all 4 Ocean war theaters were involved — Arctic, Atlantic Pacific and Indian, total human resources involved in the war exceeded 1,7 billion people. September the 2nd meant the End of that horrible war and gave hope for peace and freedom.
The war started on 1 September 1939 and lasted until 2 September 1945 (6 years, 1 day)

An american invasion of the Japanese homeland would have lead to absolute cultural and economical devastation as well as 10-15x the casualties the nuclear bomb inflicted(The estimate given by the American defence department of the time numbering to 670 000 American military casualties alone, 1.2 million Japanese military deaths and 4+ million Japanese civilian deaths, considering that even the youngest of toddlers were being trained in mindless bushido-guerilla tactics). Plus, the Americans would have been far less willing to lave the homelands if they had to win it over with their own blood and probably would have occupied the country as a puppet for a good half of a century.

About two years ago I read a very good book about the last two years of WWII in the Pacific Theater, "Retribution: The Battle for Japan, 1944-1945" by Max Hastings (in England it is called "Nemesis" with the same subtitle). It's quite thorough, and covered a lot of areas that I knew absolutely nothing about: the Burmese campaign, the war between the Soviet Union and Japan after the defeat of Nazi Germany. A great read for anyone interested in the subject.

Ha, good one! This day in history Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address just three weeks after he was shot in the head at a Broadway Musical.

The Japanese military was already defeated.

The purpose of dropping the atomic bombs was to remove the Emperor from power.

The US wanted unconditional surrender.

As other exmaples of the insanity, nearly 10 years later MacArthur wanted to nuke China and Eisenhower the Philippines.

It's amusing how history justifies the actions of the victors :lolol:

1. Japanese army wasn't defeated since they would still fight

2. Purpose of dropping nuke was to instantly win this war because they didn't had weapon to counter nukes (even newest submarine carrier wouldn't match with nukes)

3. i have no fooking clue where you get those informations....

Sadly, but not for all were War over in 1945. What about Baltic states?Poland,Ukraine? Many soldiers fought further against Soviets in these countries. So war was over only for Big ones.

No hate here :)

There is so much propoganda and discolourment surrounding all events in history, and considering the events surrounding WW2 changed the world completely the truth should be remembered.

"3. i have no fooking clue where you get those informations...."

The Korean war and Operation Vulture, Dien Bien Phu

"Sadly, but not for all were War over in 1945. What about Baltic states?Poland,Ukraine? Many soldiers fought further against Soviets in these countries. So war was over only for Big ones"

Stalin was more insane than Hitler (and killed more people). People so easily forget that assisting the Soviets caused much angiush and pain for the eastern Europeans for many many years.

As another example, how many people know that 30% of all casualties in WW2 were Chinese?
