Female, pretty sure. There are also lots of female Soviet units, eg snipers, T-34s, IL-2s

Relic confirmed it's a girl when a friend and I had a discussion about it, I think Cynthia herself popped up and said so.
The internal battery has run dry, the game can now be played. However, clock based events will no longer occur.

On a side note, it actually crossed my mind during the commander reveal yesterday that there is only one women commander. Would be cool if one of the (hopefully eventual) new Soviet commanders was another one.
