Ok the GTX 770 is a rebranding and price-point game by NVidia.

What about the 780? This is their true next-gen card. $650 at newegg. Insane? Or maybe worth the money?

It is expensive but it is the true next gen card (uses the GK110 Titan chip).

No.
Despite being a re-brand, the 770 makes way more sense.

Firstly, a SINGLE GTX 570 will get ~90fps in CoH2 at max settings (except AA) at 1080p. A 770 is approximately equal to a GTX570-SLI setup - except it'll actually be used; so expect close to 200fps. In addition, the difference between the 770 and 780 is between 8 and 12%, but the price-difference is almost 40%.

Unless you're running a 1600p monitor - or a bunch of 1440p screens - the extra vram won't help at all. And, unless you absolutely need the best performance out there, it's more efficient to just get a 770 (or two).

I own a 570 and only get between 30 and 40 average FPS on medium settings and a 1200p monitor with the latest drivers.

^ Im the same (I have two 570s but I find the SLI is more trouble than it's worth)

When I play Coh2 with SLI the ground texture flickers (even with shadows turned off) and the lack of V-Ram really creates a bottleneck for me when playing Modded Skyrim.

I currently am only using one 570 while the other one is on ebay, and I find the performance to be a lot more consistent than with two cards.

I will sell both cards and then go for a 780. I can't wait.

The good news: RTS games are not that demanding (if properly optimized).

Both cards will give you excellent performance for pretty much any game. But since you are considering a high end tech product, you should have several things in mind:

-What resolution(s) will you be running? Multiple monitor setup? This tends to be the most important factor in rendering speed (fps). If you are running at 1920x1080, both cards should give you no problems at all (they should run the latest high quality FPS games at very good speeds, on that resolution)

-Are you a fan of Anti-Aliasing(AA)? Besides resolution, it is the single most expensive feature to render. I personally RARELY use AA, but many people feel it looks like crap if they get alaising in games. Even FXAA (the faster one) hits your fps considerably. The better the card, the better it'll handle AA at high resolutions, especially when theres a lot of stuff going on-screen.

If you are NOT running multiple monitors, or higher than 1080 res, and you could care less about AA, I'd go with the less expensive card (unless you play other, more taxing games, like Crysis kind of stuff).

TBH, the real advantage of getting the "best" card in the market, is simply to spend less time upgrading. You don't need the biggest beasts to run at high quality settings (especially for RTS).

SLI is also deceptive: It gives you a lot of advantages, but not everyone has a multiple GPU setup ($$$), so support in games is not always optimal.

You must be doing something very, very wrong, or have a slow CPU. I'm certain I'm on max settings (100% quality, no AA, rest ultra/max/etc.) at 1080p, and I get ~90fps the entire time. It NEVER drops below 60. And that's with the performance nerf from running two monitors (1080p @ 144hz + 1200p @ 60hz).

Full system:
Core i7 2600k @ 4.5ghz
8GB DDR3 1866mhz
2x GTX 570 @ 800/2000 @1.035v
2x 500gb HDD Raid 0 (COH2 is on this) ~ 300-400mb/s read
2x 60gb SSD Raid 0 (Windows, etc.) ~ 1.1gb/s read

Can you post your specs? 30/40fps on medium @ 1200p doesn't sound close to right.

a 570 getting 90 fps? that does not sound right. I have a 670 and on max i still get a noticeable stutter during blizzards

I only have a 24" monitor right now, but if I get a fat GFX card I'd like to go to 26" and move my 24" to be a permanent second monitor. I also love anti-aliasing and would like to be able to make HD videos from coh2 with AA cranked up as high as possible.

You got that right. I want zero problems regarding FPS when running all current -and immediate future games- from a GPU so I'll pay the money.

Half of the time I spent sucking balls at playing CoH was because I had the graphics maxed out and was spending too much time gawping at how good stuff looked

I wanna be able to do that again, minus being shite at the game!

Monitor size is irrelevant, resolution is now. If you move to a 2550x1440 resolution then you'll need all the power you can get/afford.

Im running CoH2 completely maxxed with a HD 6970 2GB @ 1920X1200. It doesnt take anything fancy to max out CoH2 tbh.

tbh I am kinda disapointed that the graphics are not better, thats why I have a gtx 670. I was never going to upgrade, but I wish their was something that made it worth upgrading, especially in a game I know I would love.

I am making a new build as we speak and I am ALL OVER the Gtx 780..... I was ABOUT to go gtx 670 FTW in SLI but have re thought the idea and go for the GTX 780 instead.

I am still waiting for some versions to come out as I want to have a backplateas well - on or aftermarket.

I KNOW that gtx 670 FTW in SLI will out perform the GTX 780 but I can allways SLI the gtx 780 down the line.

* it will be a sliight upgrade from my 9500 GT....

Yeah I'm running maxed out with a gtx 570 while also streaming at 1080p. I've had my computer for 2.5 years and it's still going strong.

The Asus Direct CUII is an old model, I read they got a new one in the pipeline to be released within the month. I would propose to check the MSI Series, they have updated their fan layout..
