The Führergrenadier Brigade had been commited to a localized attack meant to draw the attention of the 9th Armoured Division setting up for a larger armoured encirclement. If all things went well the 2nd and 12th SS Panzer Divisions would encircle the 9th and destroy it.

The roads were littered with wreckage and corpses, but onwards the Grossdeutschland went. They had to retake the city by dusk and disrupt the advance of the 1st Guards Mechanized Corps, or it would be their corpses littering the road.

The way to Budapest was blocked, the Kampfgruppe Richter was in the way, dug in and prepared. But the 2nd Guards Mechanized corps would not be stopped, they had the force and reserves to make their way through. Or so they thought.

Falling back towards the polish border the Grossdeutschland did what it could to cover the reat of the 3rd Panzer Korps, but the russians were in hot pursuit and so a battlefield was chosen to give the Russians a bloody nose.

Hidden in the countryside the 3rd Fallschirmjaeger Regiment prepared it's deadly ambush as the 7th Armoured division moved onwards. Guns at the ready and talk of armour in reserve they waited as the british tanks rolled ever closer..
And my thoughts on the state of the balance for April 2017 and what could be done better.

Operation Hammer and Sickle had begun and the 3rd Panzergrenadier Division guarding a vital crossing was the first target. The 3rd Guards Mechanized corps let loose it's full brutality against the Panzergrenadiers who had barely had time to dig in by the river.

The 7th Infantry Division had barely begun preperations when they came under attack from the Germans, infantry supported by Panthers and Panzer IVs launched a vicious attack crushing the initial outer perimeter pushing the 7th Infantry into a desperate last ditch by a small village by the river side, hoping for reinforcements to arrive.
