Destroyed Team Weapons

While just watching a replay of my recent games, I noticed that one of my PAKs actually destroyed a Maxim MG and all of its team members just died. The PAK was only granted a single infantry kill so my question is, what is supposed to happen to team weapon members if their weapon is destroyed? Do they just die?

Has been around forever, there even was a replay of someone always aiming his rifle grenades directly at the maxims, making them pop about when they reached midgame. As far as I know this is kind of intentional, although having them run off the battle field like the last guy from an AT gun/mortar would probably look better than them just going pop.
