I wanted to watch a match from the forums here so i clicked the download button. it downloaded a file

But i cant open it, can someone tell me how to make it work?

You need to put it in your replays folder.
Default location is C:\Users\Yournamehere\Documents\my games\company of heroes 2\playback

Adding to this. Replays are basically all the inputs orders which were done by each player and then reproduced using the games engine. You won't be able to see the replay outside of the game. This is also why a patch hits, you might not be able to watch old replays, as stats on units can be changed and produce a "desync" as the results provided by the the input orders would not be the same.
This is also one of the reasons we don't have a proper reconnection system nor a good replay (rewind) mode. You can't just jump forward on a replay or even go back a single second, cause there's no save state of the global situation of a game on any given time.
It would be GLORIOUS if for AoE4/CoH3 we could have 1 min intervals on which we could then jump back n forth. I would say even 5 mins would make watching any replay less tedious if you just miss a moment. Not to talk about how much more content creators and caster would benefit from this.
