I just thought perhaps someone on this busy forum could give me an advice on Steam?

In short: I have auto updating enabled, but Steam does not update with the latest patch. It did last time, but not this time.

Any ideas?

Perhaps a glitch in the matrix? Don't worry about it unless it happens again.

Ummm...not sure what yuo mean byt 'the matrix'.

And I'm not worrying about next time....it's this time: It doesn't update, meaning I can't play the game! If I don't find a solution, there's not even going to be a next time.

I tried to look at Steam forums, but found no advice on this situation.

Have you tried verifying the integrity of the installation files through steam?

That happens with non-English versions coh2.
Switches to English and then checks the cache of the game.

I'm having this problem too. Got auto-patching enabled, but no patching happens

Not entirely sure what you mean, Capiqua, but my version is the English one. Were you suggesting that you must change the games language to another, and back to English to get it to work?

Just in the middle of doing this. I'll post here if it solves it!

--------------------------
UPDATE ONE

Verifying the cache spurred on the steam update for the game, which only took 15/20 seconds, at which point I thought it had worked. Though, when launching the game I still got the following message on the menu screen:

"Game version out of date. Automatch will be unavailable and no XP will be granted."

I'll try another cache verification and see where it takes me!

You left me immobile. To me it worked by changing the language and checking. Try you another language.

Try, restarting your steam and game (or PC). There seems to be issue with steam synchronizing. It worked for me

I have restarted as well Steam as my computer. No change.

My language setting is english, so if it works for everyone else in English, why would it change anything to swap in chinese or something?

I did start chekcing the cache, but it seemed to be a very lengthy proces. I abandoned it after 15 minutes, but ofc it's the only way I'll just have to leave it at that.

One thing just struck me, though: I was on-line last night when the stream - and possibly the patch - was released. Could that have something to do with it?

Changed download location.
Changed language.
Checked for cache integrity.

Restarted Steam and Pc a billion times.

No go. It is not patching.

Seems to be finally fixed.

It appears that Steam somehow didn't want to patch because updates for Vista and AVG were available.

I don't know wth that has got to do with anything, but after that it works.

He who invented this shitty Steam should be Boiled!

Glad you fixed the problem.

I think you are not meant to be in the game, when they are applying patch. Not sure what effect it has

Why are you blaming Steam, when its your Vista and AVG updates causing the choke...

Because the entire interface of Steam is only an amenity when there are no problems.

As soon as something doesn't work, it's hell on earth.

Firstly, you get no info what is wrong.
Secondly, you get next to no advice on what the different options do (like validate cache)
Thirdly, you can find no help for such problems in the help section.

I'm angry at the growing use of Steam because it introduces an extra level of complexity and confusion for the average gamer. Not only do we need to understand the set up and hardware pitfalls of the client installation AND the requirements of the game. We also have to guess what some basically redundant platform for games is messing about with.

Because let's face it: Steam isn't necessary to run any of these games. It's simply a commercial platform we have been forced into so they can make us do all kinds of after-sale purchases.

Your Vista and AVG was blocking the update, not Steam.
