I've killed tens of them in an as small room as possible underground prior to 1.8 update. I've got a solid beacon setup in my base with regeneration, resistance, and strength. That should make it easy as it takes 5 seconds to kill one with a Smite V diamond sword. I believe withers got a lot harder with the 1.8 update so better get some good armor gear.

Unfortunately I had to relocate the ~~slave~~ villager powered wheat farm due to near by villages. But that was also a great chance of redesigning some parts.
