There were various "Ober"-ranks in the Wehrmacht depending on your function (Oberschütze, Oberkannonier, Oberpionier etc.), similiar to privat first class in the USF.

Obersoldaten is just the overall term for all of those various Ober-Ranks.

Both Uber and Ober implys Nietzches Ubermensch which was (horribly) used by the nzzzzizzz. I know nothing about the actual history, just saying.

I doubt Relic will chance the name.

"Obersoldaten" is actually a pretty good name for them! In german "ober" is basically a word for something elite or better/best.

"Ober" just means that the grade of the soldier is higher than of others. It also refers to the word "oben" which freely translated means in englisch "above". A german military rank for example is "Oberst".
It is a legit german word.

You are right. Still, obersoldat makes no sense in this context. All other units titel refers to their rank, function or type (vehicles). Obersoldat violates this rule.

Honour Guard is bad idea either. There was no such formation in the Wehrmacht. It sounds like a parade formation, not like elite solidiers or veterans. Besides Guards is alread taken.

Approciate would be something like:
(Ostfront) Veterans
Sturmtrupp

Yes, why not! Or maybe they could be called "Elite Kampfgruppe" = "Elite Combat Group".

Obersoldaten is pretty bad but Honor Guard is worse.

Do you even know what Honor Guards do? They're not combat troops at all.

They are purely ceremonial in purpose and have no place in battle.

No disrespect to Honor Guards serving/served though - it is a unit of honor and requires a lot of discipline/practice, but they are not combat units to see on the field.

It would be like having Air Force One doing sorties in the middle east.

How about just calling them "Veteran Grenadiers" or "Ostfront Veterans?" Even "Elite Grenadiers" would be an improvement.

Then how does one justify experienced soldiers as getting 5 more levels of veterancy?

I´ve never ever heard the term Obersoldat... and I´m German.

That picture shows that it existed... but still it´s so uncommon and formal that it sounds stupid.

Probably like "Gesichtserker" aka "face-oriel" for "Nase" aka "Nose". Nobody uses that shit.

Why not just call them Übersoldaten? It's a more accurate description of their talents.

Grenadiers are also described as experienced troops (quite the opposite of concripts) but they still get 3 vet ranks just like cons.

It's just basic faction design. It doesn't matter whether a unit already represents experienced troops or not.

EDIT: I don't have problem with the term "obersoldat". I think the name represents their combat effectiveness quite nicely.

You can´t sell that stuff in Germany. Also the SS - infamous for their actions - in a game called Company of Heroes would cause discomfort.

Why can we have NKVD commander then?

Fair enough. Still inappropriate. A private is is not really a an elite soldier. Besides he serves in a special formation.

I assume it´s not forbidden in any country that is a significant market. Germans are pretty sensitive about the Third Reich for obvious reasons; that´s the dirt stain in hour history. I bet a significant amount of people here doesn´t even know what the NKVD was contrary to the SS.

Eastern Europeans might be offended about the NKVD, but I don´t know about the problems there mentioning them in games.

Because Putinist-Nationalist youth of modern Russia who believe that any negative depiction of Soviet Union is a nefarious scheme of Nazis will sabotage COH2s already bad user rating into oblivion.

It was 2.2 out of 10 at one point, I believe?

Also, I read somewhere that the Obersoldat rank (or -grenadier, -pionier, -fusilier) was awarded to those that simply had no leadership potential whatsoever. Anyone with an inkling of leadership potential would instead be promoted right to Gefreiter after a set period of time in service. Thus those ranked Obersoldat would really not be first rate troops..

The unit portrait makes them look like older soldiers, men in their 40s. I suppose they're supposed to portray very experienced, seasoned and/or lucky veterans.
