The last 3-4 times I tried using this it slowed the entire site down for several minutes.

Old topic but yeah, we changed/removed it since. You can use filters now to check for viewed yes/no. And it won't lag.
There's no order by "last viewed time " anymore as the old link used to do, but it's not really useful either. Filtering those you viewed or not with the default sort order (by last message) should be already good enough.
We plan to add thread sorting by other criteria than "last message time" at some point but it's out of the scope of this topic.
