Jesulin's Road to Victory

highlight
Introduction
Bienvenidos de nuevo, amigos!

I was recently promoted to Senior Strategist, so I feel that I have an ongoing responsibility to contribute to COH2.ORG. I am pretty excited about making this guide and I hope you enjoy reading it.

Many of you know me, or have heard about me, in Company of Heroes 2: the keys to my success are that:
  • I like the game (so I can enjoy practising my skills frequently);
  • I think clearly and decisively;
  • I am lucky to have nimble fingers for keyboard skills;
  • I concentrate upon anticipating my enemy's moves, in order to outwit and thereby outplay my opponent.

I have participated in several major tournaments where there was prize money involved, such as the past Sunday Night Fight Season 5 (5th/6th Position) and the Alienware Arena Cup (1st Position): these were results beyond my wildest dreams! In November 2014, a new tournament was announced by this forum: the $ 1,000 COH2.ORG 1v1 Tourney (Dec. 13th -15th), which was sponsored by Dr. Wachs Rechtsanwälte, in which I participated, intending to fight my way to become champion again.

In this tournament I was the top seed, and there was a lot of mental pressure on me to play well.

Round 2
I was given a bye in R1, so I was waiting for my rival to emerge from the match between nakyup (# 64) and PotisMan (# 65). PotisMan SKSK(# 65) turned out to be my opponent on Kholodny Ferma Summer (BO3). This was not a difficult match and it was one which I had no problem in winning. Potisman is a very respectful player and I wish him good luck for the future!

Strategy

My strategy was clear: to build a lot of infantry during the first few minutes of the game, in order to win control of the whole map. The following image shows the game at the 06:00 minute mark. Four Conscript squads can deal very well with a few Grenadiers.

The following screenshot shows my map control, when my T34 hit the enemy base at the 10:00 minute mark. My opponent had no chance without a pak!

It is no problem to beat USF players from my side of the map. A simple Puma can deal against all kinds of USF vehicles. In this case, I faced 3 Rifle squads, followed by a Captain. The following screenshot shows my map control at the 06:00 minute mark.

Round 3
In the next round, I played against DaDokisinXUSUS (#32), a very good player, who participated in the Alienware Arena Cup (NA division) and finished in 3rd position. I anticipated some problems, but the eventual result was 2-0 to me.

Strategy

In this game, my strategy was a little different from Round 1. Against a better player, you must be very careful. DaDokisinX made 5 Conscripts squads, then teched to T2 and then T3. I rushed a Panzer II Luchs, in order to deal with his Conscript spam. A mine in the middle of the map and then Shrecks and one Raketenwerfer, killed a T-34 which lacked supporting units. My squads were reinforcing in my Battlegroup Headquarters (T2) during that part of the game.

In game 2, battling DaDokisinX, where he chose to play as the Ostheer Army. I started very well with 4 Conscript squads. I had a clear advantage, until his Grenadiers upgraded with G43. A Maxim MG, with Conscripts squads, can be very effective against these units. Losing some of his squads to the Soviets made DaDokisinX play more defensively. A T-34, supported by Conscripts with AT-nades and one Zis gun, won easily against a Panzer IV and one Pak 40. I did not choose any Commander until the final minutes of the game, when I selected Guard Rifle Combined Arms Tactics, in order to call in an IL-2 Sturmovik Attack.

Round 4
In this round, I played against Hon3ynuts USUS, a little-known player, but with a good rank in all four factions. These were the last two games on the Saturday.

Strategy

I find that Langreskaya games are just boring: they last so long, with slow gameplay. I was trying to punish my opponent very quickly with a fast T2 tech, but Hon3ynuts played very well as the OKW, researching T2 and T4, researching 3 Obersoldaten squads. This is the reason why I got a T-34 at the 13:30 minute mark; the tank contributed to the ultimate 'good game'. The game was pretty even, until a mistake was made by Hon3ynuts. A mine exploded under his Panther V tank, causing Heavy Engine Damage. My IS-2 finished the job.

Below, I set out several important screenshots from the game:-

After the first game, where Hon3ynuts played very well in a long game of 39 minutes, it was my time to play as Axis (OKW) on Langreskaya, which in my opinion is an Axis map. My opponent played with five Conscript squads, so I could risk a little more with an SdKfz 251/17 Flak Half-track rush. This Halftrack helped me to fight against Conscripts + T2, so I finished the match in almost 15 minutes, without any problem.

Round 5
In the next round, I played against VindicareX USUS(#8), a very good opponent with a lot of previous experience in this kind of tournament. VindicareX participated in the Alienware Arena Cup (NA) and finished in 2nd position, losing the finals to OMGPOP! VindicareX had beaten Thunderhun and VonIvan, among others. This was my first match on the Sunday afternoon, where the map was Semoskiy Summer. The result was 2-1 to me.

Strategy

I had a very clear strategy in mind: to remain as far as possible on the battlefield and not retreat, because I have several problems with this map, playing as an OKW. I did not have map control, so I simply camped on the middle of the map. A fast Battlegroup Headquarters (Tier 2) built after 3x Volksgrenadiers gave me a small advantage over VindicareX's infantry, but it was impossible to win against his good Guards micro; his 120mm Mortar had more than 25 kills and he secured 2x T34-85 call-ins. VindicareX deserved his win: well played!

Now it was my turn to take to the field as the Soviets, probably my favourite faction and probably on one of the best maps to play as the Soviets! Semi-Finals
In the next round, I played against Cruzz FIFI (#4). Cruzz had won against players like Con!(#29) -HOI-PauL.a.D (#13) and BartonPL (#5).I knew he would be a difficult opponent to beat, because Cruzz is well versed in the statistics about all units in Company Of Heroes 2. He knows his game.

This became a difficult BO5 series against Cruzz, where I eventually beat him 3-1.

Build Order

Strategy

In this game, I was trying to obtain map control very quickly, researching a fast M3A1 clown car with Flamers as passengers, in order to surprise Cruzz's Volksgrenadiers. Slowly. however, I began to bleed units. Cruzz's Obersoldaten and MG34 did a very good job against my Conscripts/Shock troopers/Maxims. I had to hold on, until the KV-8 entered the battlefield.

Cruzz had a very solid game with a Panther and I had nothing to counter it. I felt like a boxer backed into a corner, so I was thinking about using Cpt. Price's blob/spam tactics. 3 Zis guns facing the Panther did a good job. With my IS-2 in the field, the game changed. I now felt very comfortable as Cruzz began to lose some squads, probably because he was a little nervous.

In the following screenshot, we can see one of the highlights of the game: 2 Panther Vs fighting against 2 Is-2s, with 2 Zis AT guns in support.

We must also congratulate Cruzz's Pak 43 crew (Vet5) who knocked out an IS-2, but then died under an Incendiary Artillery Barrage from the Soviets.

In the final moments of the game on the Southern Victory point, the last battle of the game took place between a Panther V and Jagpanzer IV versus 2 IS-2s with Zis support, and the match ended in favor of the Soviet Union.

Now it was my turn to command the OKW on this side of the map. I knew I was at a disadvantage, because I do not feel at all relaxed, fighting players who enter buildings very fast on Kholodny Ferma.

Build Order

Strategy

I had planned on staying strong in the center of the map, using a T1 HQ. I was a little unlucky with my units against one T-70, losing some squads in stupid moments, which forced me to switch to a risky strategy, using OKW Ostwinds.

You can see my T1 Build defending against a Soviet attack in the follow screenshot:

Now, we had to confront each other on another map, Faymonville Approach, where I cannot adapt very well, spawning from the North. I knew it would be very difficult as Soviets and as you can see, I did not choose the USF, because it is too risky in a tournament semi-final.

Build Order

Strategy

I had to try to be very aggressive with the Soviets, so I decided to rush a fast M3A1 clown car with flame engineers aboard, to snatch a clear fuel advantage, before Volksgrenadiers with Shrecks/Raketenwerfer arrived. I made a big mistake when I encountered Cruzz's T3 Halftrack, which killed my M3A1 + all my Engineers. It was game over. I tried to survive until the two T34-85s came out, but it was too late. I found it impossible to deal against the Halftrack Attack move which Cruzz executed throughout the match.

The following screenshot shows the crucial moment in the game, when my M3A1 was knocked out by the OKW Halftrack

Now it was my turn to play as the OKW from this position. In my opinion, it was an easy game, where I could manage my units very effectively against the Soviets. Playing defensively was my only mistake:

I played very comfortably with my T2 HQ in the center of the battlefield. Reinforcing my units was a wise decision and a good way to deal with Soviets on this particular map. Cruzz did not stand any chance against me in G3.

The Final
In the last round, I played against Luvnest DEDE(#7), a very good opponent who defeated me twice during 2014 in minor tournaments, namely the ESL WFA Launch Cup and ESL 1v1 Summer Cup. Luvnest had beaten players like Siberian(#11) Symbiosis (#14) and OMGPOP (#2).

It was Monday, December 15 and I was ready to fight: bring it on! The first two games were played on Kholodny Ferma Summer; later two more games on Semoskiy Summer.

Strategy

This was probably the best match I have played on Company Of Heroes 2, with perfect micro of all my units and a heavy push against OKW units. There is a huge advantage spawning from the Right hand side and I did my best to use that. T1 is a good way to play against the OKW, because you can drain manpower easily with an M3A1 clown car + Flame Engineers.

In the second game, I tried to play the same way in which I did against Cruzz. 4 Volksgrenadiers and an HQ in the middle of the map. Not controlling my side and losing all the buildings compelled me to play defensively. A heavy push from Luvnest with his Conscripts and Shock troops caused me to bleed too much manpower. Cruzz's fast T-70 was so painful, owing to its effectiveness against OKW. Finally, the arrival of a KV-8 forced me to surrender. But, the good news about the next two games was that I had an advantage in Victory points for the next two matches.

After facing off against each other during the first two games on Kholodny Ferma Summer, it was now time to play the 3rd and 4th games on Semoskiy Summer. I started by playing as sovietssoviets and Luvnest as ostheerostheer. I was surprised at Luvnest's faction choice, because most players are afraid to use the Ostheer faction.

Again, as in previous matches, I selected 4 Conscripts, then 1 engineer building T1, with an M3A1 clown car on the field. Do you remember the Catastrat? The strategy lives on.

Final thoughts
!“Every Champion Was Once A Contender That Refused To Give Up.” - Rocky Balboa

Many posters ask me how to handle the pressure of playing these tournament games; a lot of players apparently suffer fatigue, when playing long games. In my case, this has not been a problem, because my performance has been excellent. Rather like a professional tennis player, I conserve my forces and keep my cards close to my chest, until the semifinals/finals. I really do enjoy the stress in Company Of Heroes 2, because I have conditioned myself and therefore, I do not suffer adversely from it! I do not run late night drunk streams and I make sure that I practise in advance, with chosen opponents, who force me to refine my skills.

My approach in the tournament was totally focused. Practising with very good players like Quentin and OMGPOP helped me improve my skills, whereas other players only seemed to be involved in ordinary automatch games (which I highly doubt fine hones their skills at all), or casting a drunk stream.

Finally, I would like to thank all the staff at CoH2.org for encouraging me to write this guide - especially those who hoisted this long review onto the forums - and above all, my special thanks to my fans, as well as all the players who have supported me, both before and after the tournament. It has been a pleasure to return and silence the naysayers.

See you at the next tournament, hopefully soon! And remember! Be flexible and ADAPT
