"During the attack on Metz in November 1944, the US 5th Infantry Division's 2nd Infantry Regiment had the task of securing a bridge over the river Nied near the town of Sanry-Sur-Nied. While the 6th Armored Division crossed to the other side of the river, the Regiment dug in to defend the town and the surrounding high ground. Here they met the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division."
