Stumbling out he could see men running hither and dither as his Sergeant ran up to him, grabbed him and sent Fritz off as well.

Threatening the flank of the 2nd SS Panzer Korps the 3rd Armoured Division had managed to secure a vital crossroads.
In response the Kampfgruppe Meyer was assembled using elements of several Panzer Divisions and a Fallschirmjaeger division and ordered to counter-attack.
Pushed to the extreme. the 212th Infantrie Division was barely holding on, the russians had been bombarding it for days, launched infiltration attacks and head on assaults.
But reinforcements were finally on the way. With this they could surely push back the soviets !
For days the Germans had been trying to dislodge a soviet Rifle Battalion dug in at a town. Fed up with the lack of progress better troops and Panzers were called up in the hopes that it would do the trick.
But by then the soviets were bringing up their own equipment
Recce had picked up on Jerry movement in the area. Corps HQ suspected preperation for an assault and so sent in the 11th Armoured to flush them out and deal with them.

Hauptmann Dietrich checked his orders again to make sure. To seize a small village ahead of the Grossdeutschlands assault. It had to be done in the morning and support would be light.
Dug in around a series of frozen villages. The 210th Infantrie Division fortified the area for the last few months. But as the Soviet war machine unleashed hell the first few villages quickly fell, shattered by artillery and tanks. At the Main defensive point the 210th gathered everything it could to stop the Soviet army.

A way into the Ruhr District had opened and the Guards Armoured Division was pushing through it.
But waiting in the distance was the 12th SS Panzer Division. Recently reinforced and refitted. Ready to show the British who were the masters of the battlefield.
The flank had collapsed and the central supply centre was exposed. A hasty counter-attack with the Kampfgruppe Meyer was launched to buy time to rebuild a defence and to shift the supply centre further back.
