Thing is Bofors is usually going to get taken out by indirect fire or by tanks. 2X LeIGs usually hardcounter it well (assuming no standfast which is more cancerous than advanced emplacement upgrade). As Ostheer, currently you'll need to split up mortar teams to avoid driven off completely by the suppressive fire, but if it's removed, then there is absolutely no counterplay by the UKF. Perhaps we should also consider the relatively cheap cost of the Bofors.

Also please keep in mind one very underused trick of Ost mortars: smoke. If the Bofors is unsupported, smoke, send in flame pios on flanks or flame HT and Bofors goes down fast. If supported the Bofors could attack ground through the smoke if other units sight for it, but that requires micro.

The thing with emplacements is that everyone expects one single unit to effortlessly hardcounter them. Sure mortar HT comes close with flame shell, but it usually takes some coordination to take them out. Once outplayed, the UKF investment is now 0 so there's a number of things to keep in mind. Remember non-doctrinal UKF indirect fire is non-existent outside of the Bofors and mortar pit.

Is it possible to lock vet levels behind upgrades?

The game is called "company of heroes" where one of the key gameplay mechanics is unit preservation and vet; it takes skill and micro to get it. vCoH tried the vet purchase or upgrade mechanic and I agree with Relic that it goes against this in CoH2. Keep in mind they tried it again with elite troops vet training ability, but ultimately removed it due also in part to other factors such as timing.

Having taken a few programming courses myself, I have alot of respect and sympathy for relic and the issues they have with bugs.

Bugs will always be part of any human programming endeavour. However it's their software testing mentality that's made Relic a joke. Of course there are interconnected parts, but it's a professional software company. I'm sure you've learned in your programming courses that testing is very, very important; unless you can write a mathematical proof that your code works (possible, but very difficult due to the complexity of the system), then you'll have to empirically test your code.

To be honest I wouldn't be too harsh on Relic either, since I suspect the company's poorly managed (another important aspect of software engineering), but the recent bugs from patches have made it a laughing stock. If humans can make the hardware and code to land rovers on Mars, then I'm sure it's possible to make a less buggy computer game.

Edit: I also suspect their main talent is focused on their next big project (probably DoW3), so CoH2 may be run by a skeleton crew.

Technically if you keep all your models alive you still get all the vet bonuses. In reality this is very difficult so the result is inconsistency. If you want to play smart, as soon as a squad hits vet 3, keep it behind new recruits and fully upgrade with lmgs to minimise model loss (wow such realism).

I've had fun putting heavy sappers with Vickers and Tommies in the M3 to minimise model loss since it counts as a green-cover "garrison." That way they'll mostly take health damage.
