More Epic shit show:

Another month passed and Epic missed their roadmap goals yet again:
https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/ckn6fn/another_month_passed_and_epic_missed_their/
To top it all off they claim that they have shipped cloud saves as a feature, even though only 2 games of more than 100 on EGS have it. Other features such as mod support, user reviews, achievements, wishlists and a shopping cart are perpetually 4-6 or >6 months away, effectively getting delayed each passing month.

Since we are getting closer to the release of Borderlands 3, I would like to remind you all what Randy Pitchford said about EGS and its lack of features. I summarised his tweets in this post some months ago.

''Epic has published a near term road map. This road map includes a look into things they are committing to. If I were a betting man, I would expect that there are more things that happen than what they are committing to. We also must acknowledge that Borderlands 3 does not exist *today* but rather it will exist in September. The store will be different when the game launches. It will become a boon to their store if they bring sufficient features to make the customer experience great for us. Epic will suffer (again) if, by the time Borderlands 3 launches, the customer experience is not good enough. This is a tremendous forcing function for Epic. This is also really good for Borderland 3 as Borderlands 3 will be the biggest, by far, new game to arrive on the Epic store since they launched and Epic can be sure to invest huge amounts of resources specifically for the features most important for Borderlands 3. The forcing function of that will, in turn, make all those features available on a faster time-line than otherwise possible and this is good for all games from both the customer perspective and the developer/publisher perspective.''

So, since it is now more than likely that none of the essential features Randy Pitchford was talking about will be available at launch, what do you think he'll say when Borderlands 3 releases on EGS?

Netflix makes fun of Epic CEO. Hilarious.

The Dark Side of the Video Game Industry | Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj | Netflix:

8:36 - Epic CEO
On the latest episode of Patriot Act, Hasan takes a look at how the video game industry has grown into a $139 billion a year business and a cultural force. While gaming is more prominent than ever, some of the most popular video games are made under unfavorable working conditions. Hasan examines the exploitative labor practices at game developers like Epic and Riot Games, and the ways in which workers are finally fighting back.

CDPR:
Thronebreaker showed GOG that “exclusives don’t work for us”:
https://www.pcgamesn.com/gog-exclusives
As you might have heard on the internet, Epic’s continued pursuit of timed exclusivity deals for its store has proven unpopular. Publisher-driven exclusives on platforms like Origin and Battle.net have proven a lot easier for players to swallow – but even though CD Projekt’s own GOG briefly served as the exclusive home for Thronebreaker, the company has decided to forego exclusivity for Cyberpunk 2077.

“With Thronebreaker, we started with an exclusive, and decided to share it with a wider audience,” global communications manager Marcin Traczyk tells us at Gamescom. “It proved to us that exclusives maybe don’t work for us, because we don’t want to limit the number of people who can access the game.”

DARQ Dev's Noble Rejection of Epic Store Exclusivity Goes Viral As Epic Favors AAA Over Indies:

After Viral Epic Store Rejection, DARQ Dev Surprises Supporters With Free New DLC As Thanks:

source:
https://steamcommunity.com/games/433550/announcements/detail/1584625372618106883

Thank you!
The amount of support DARQ has received from the community has been incredible. I didn't expect my blog post (Why I turned down exclusivity deal from the Epic Store[medium.com]) to result in so much good will and support. Please know that I don't take any of it for granted and I'm truly grateful. Unfold Games will always be on the side of its customers.

Upcoming Patch
We've been working on a patch that will add support for more controllers and fix a few bugs. Big Thank You to the community for providing feedback and reporting issues, as well as your patience - the patch should be out in a few days.

Surprise Announcement
The feedback we've received has been overwhelmingly positive, which is a dream come true for a first-time developer. Something that has been mentioned quite a lot since the launch is that DARQ could use a few extra levels. Message received! I'm excited to announce that we're planning to release additional levels for DARQ later this year. To acknowledge all the support we've received from the community and express our grattitude, DARQ DLC's will be available for free.

These DARQ developers are exposing EPIC's anti-steam propaganda using Tim Sweeney own words.
Great tactic and PR stunt.

DARQ developers on Twitter in answer to Tim Sweeney: "If you change your mind and accept DARQ to your store non-exclusively, I’ll donate 100% of my EGS revenue to a charity. If you accept, the charity can be picked by the gaming’s community at a later date."

https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/cvukuu/darq_developers_on_twitter_in_answer_to_tim
https://twitter.com/UnfoldGames/status/1166089157946564608
Blacky-Noir
Which means something probably happened backstage. It's weird for a newcomer, alone, to publicly tackle Tim Sweeney like that. Even if we don't like him or EGS, he's still a big big part of the gaming industry, and the DARQ creator wants to make a career in it.
Something may have happened and rubbed him the wrong way.

Sotyka94
He's actually a redditor (saw a post on r/fuckepic about this) and said that Tim asked him if He's willing to accept an exclusive deal, weeks before release, when Tim Epic promised that they not gonna buy out games just before release anymore.

DARQ dev said that He is happy to sell on EGS, but not as exclusive. Tim declined because he cannot accept that the game would sell on Steam as well, even tho Tim already stated that Epic is not anti Steam.

Also, DARQ dev is wanting to ride this as a PR stunt. Which is not a problem IMO, if you fight against lying bag of shits in the meantime.

Without fail, new BL3/Randy Pitchford drama and BL3 PC pre-orders might be below expectations:

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford Accused Of Contempt In Latest Court Filing
Gearbox continues to be embroiled in legal disputes ahead of Borderlands 3's release:

"Pitchford replied 'Internet is fine. All they care about is if my next video game is good or not."

That reminds me of the time Activision was wrapped up in a legal battle with Infinity Ward over allegations of not paying the team the money they were owed, and their PR team dropped this little gem: "Any game with the Call of Duty title will instantly sell 3 million copies regardless if it's good or not. Nobody knew who Infinity Ward was before we came along and made them relevant".

As a result of all the BL3 drama and EGS exclusivity. Informed gamers are either;
1) Buying BL3 on console
2) Waiting for BL3 steam release
3) BL3 boycott (see below)
4) yarr!

Tim Sweeney's personal vendetta with Steam and PC piracy:
https://www.reddit.com/r/fuckepic/comments/cmwxxj/why_does_tim_sweeney_have_a_personal_vendetta/
MrJinxyface
Tim and Epic left PC about 15+ years ago, denouncing us as all pirates, and saying consoles make more money so PC isn't a viable platform for gaming and would die off. They didn't want to do the work.

Valve wanted to do the work, and over the last 15 years has molded PC gaming into what it is, and arguably made it the most valuable ecosystem.

Now Tim is a salty piece of shit, and is trying to crawl back and demand he deserves a piece of the pie. But instead of doing work this time, he's just trying to mudsling and gaslight and PR his way into getting people to think Steam is somehow bad and what he's doing is for the "benefit" of us.

Old source why EPIC CEO gave up on PC? 03.10.08:
https://www.wired.com/2008/03/unreal-creator/
Epic Games co-founder Tim Sweeney thinks consoles are beating PCs, and the PC gaming industry has no one to blame but themselves.

Epic getting desperate with borderlands 3 by offering bigger revenue cut to BL3 through Support A Creator program code when purchasing the game
https://www.reddit.com/r/fuckepic/comments/cweezl/epic_getting_desperate_with_borderlands_3_by/
MrBubbaJ
I think to a certain extent this is a make or break moment for EGS. If Borderlands doesn't push a large number of people to, not only purchase the game, but to keep making purchases going forward on the storefront I don't think anything will.

I doubt Epic will make a profit on the game. In 6 months it may sell 3 or 4 million copies on EGS. Borderlands 2 sold 8.5 million after a year and a half, but that included console sales and I am sure 1 or 2 Steam sales, so 4 million is probably extremely generous. But, if they did manage to sell that many, Epics cut would be just under $29 million. Tim Sweeney has said that about 58% of that would go towards direct costs (e.g., server costs, direct labor costs). That would leave them about $12 million. I'm sure Take 2 wanted more than just guaranteed sales to go Epic exclusive as sales are pretty much guaranteed for the game. I wouldn't be surprised if, at least, that whole $12 million is going right back to Take 2. I also wouldn't be surprised if Epic waived all of their fees.

Now, I don't think EGS will be gone on September 14 if they don't hit their sales goal. It will probably be around a couple of years from now regardless of how poorly it performs. But, over the next couple of months Tim Sweeney will probably be looking at the numbers. If people he sees that people came to his store, purchsed Borderlands 3, and then went back to Steam or GOG, he may decide to just go into maintenance mode with the store and not sink large amounts of money into the store any more.

Amplitude & Sega considering Epic \ Stadia Exclusivity for Humankind

HUMANKIND WOULD CONSIDER BEING AN EPIC OR STADIA EXCLUSIVE:
https://www.gamewatcher.com/news/humankind-epic-stadia-exclusive

Quoted from the original Metro interview:

GC: You joked about it in the demo, but would you really consider becoming an Epic Games Store exclusive?

JS: [laughs] Everybody’s been in touch. I mean, all of a sudden, in the last 18 months, we’ve had Stadia, we’ve had Epic Games, we’ve had the new console generation announced… there are so many options. That’s why we’re trying to simplify and say, ‘Look, right now we’re going to make a really good PC game’.

GC: Would you consider not doing it purely so as to not upset fans?

JS: Frankly, if somebody comes in and says, ‘Hey, do you want $25 million and we’ll make you an exclusive?’ We’re going to go [makes the face anyone would make if offered $25 million].

GC: I’m not sure it’d be quite that much. [laughs]

JS: [laughs] Right! But we are a for-profit organisation and you have to assume the consequences of that. But right now we’ve had a great relationship with Steam for eight years. There’s a lot of other options out there… of course we’re talking to them. Of course you have marketing visits from people.
But I don’t even know, marketing doesn’t, she’s PR [points to PR woman] and she doesn’t know… We’re talking to everybody, but I would hate to ruin our relationship with Steam or make the community angry.

As the Epic Games Store strives to add functionality that Steam had back in 2004, we finally have some news on when exactly we'll be able to download Borderlands 3 on PC - something that’s very bizarre, given how Epic said it wouldn’t happen, and how they seemingly have got Gearbox to do the heavy lifting.

Laymen Gaming | Shady Borderlands 3 Review Process Raises Some BIG Red Flags:

Borderlands 3 review: third time’s a chore:
*SNIP*
https://www.polygon.com/reviews/2019/9/9/20852642/borderlands-3-review-pc-ps4-xbox-one
2K Games and Gearbox didn’t send out review codes for Borderlands 3. Instead, they set reviewers up with new Epic Games Store accounts with the game unlocked, and gave us a few warnings about the game being a work in progress. They asked us to stay away from the DirectX 12 implementation, for example, and told us that our progress in these builds may or may not carry over to the final game.

So we were obviously not playing a finished version of Borderlands 3, which makes what I’m about to say a data point, and not a condemnation of the console version of the game, or even a look at how it will run once it’s released publicly.

I RARELY FELT LIKE I HAD ACTUALLY LEFT PANDORA
We experienced some serious issues. The game crashed frequently, and those crashes were experienced separately by three Polygon staffers playing on three different gaming PCs in different parts of the country. One of us lost a character after putting six hours into the game, and had to start from scratch. After a day or two of playing, random crashes became something I expected, not anything that surprised me — and they got worse as we went through the game.

Quests would glitch out; waypoints would refuse to show up until the game was restarted. A pop-up window randomly gave me instructions about what to do if a mission-critical vehicle was blown up or I got stuck in a level, even though nothing of the sort was happening. I guess someone on the team expected that to be an issue, but it wasn’t?

Borderlands 3's Review Situation Sure Is Strange by
Jason Schreier:

https://kotaku.com/borderlands-3s-review-situation-sure-is-strange-1837989454
Borderlands 3 reviews hit the internet this morning, but only at a select few websites, thanks to a bizarre scenario that publisher 2K says is in place because of security concerns.

Typically, video game reviewers work off early retail copies of games provided by publishers. They can be either digital or physical, and they function like any other game you’d buy in a store. Our forthcoming review of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, for example, will be based on an early retail code provided by Nintendo that functions just like the proper game will when it comes out on the eShop. Occasionally, game publishers will send out very early game builds on “debug” consoles that work a little differently, but these days, that’s rare. Usually, reviewers are playing the same game that everyone else will—just a week or two earlier.

In the case of Borderlands 3, which comes out Friday for PC and consoles, things are unusual. Rather than sending out codes for the game, 2K gave reviewers special Epic Games Store accounts loaded up with early, work-in-progress builds of Borderlands 3—a bizarre scenario that we’ve never seen before. As Polygon explained in their review:
*SNIP*
Kotaku requested access to Borderlands 3 for a review but did not get access. A representative for 2K cited security concerns and told us we’d get code for the much-anticipated loot-shooter on Thursday, September 12, the day before it launches. (We’ll do our best to get you coverage as soon as we can.) Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, the website VG247 reports that they and their fellow European video game outlets also haven’t gotten codes for security reasons. This all comes a month after 2K and its parent company Take-Two went after a YouTuber who was posting leaked information about the game.

Reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/d1vrzs/borderlands_3s_review_situation_sure_is_strange/
IdRatherBeLurking
As the article lays out, the problem is threefold:

The "review" copies sent out were pre-release versions of the game
Reviewers had to log onto a "review account" on EGS to play those builds
Some outlets were not given access, as well as all European outlets.

Thanks for the info cobra. Always fun to see how the modern video game industry self destructs.

EGS anti-consumer practices is another slap in the face to the PC gaming community.
This will only provoke new hostility towards game publishers/devs. Not sure what they are thinking, pouring gas on fire/self destructs.

Supervillains to PC Gamers:

PC Gamers to Game Industry:

As for MTX/loot box gambling.
Unfortunately, there are enough people (whales) paying to keep the charade going.

EA Makes FIFA Boss Head Of Battlefield, Battlefront, & Need For Speed, 3. sep. 2019:

The game industry knows EA MTX/progression based loot boxes with random rewards is unpopular but they do it anyway because they have whales to keep them afloat.
For years, EA Fifa perfected a new monetization scheme to target whales.

This is called dynamic difficulty adjustment/scripting/momentum. EA have a patent for this.

With EA sport games such as Fifa19 (PEGI 3, not adult gaming), top whales are paying literally thousands of dollars each year for MTX/gambling. These are full-priced retail games, not even FTP.
Also note Fifa MTX is a closed ecosystem it's not like CS GO where you can sell skins and get money back.

https://pegi.info/what-do-the-labels-mean

At best Fifa is false advertisement as PEGI 3 games should not contain adult gambling or gambling simulator (PEGI 12, PEGI 16 or PEGI 18).
At worst, the game industry are abusing a legal vaccum and normalize gambling from a very young age.
The neuroscience is clear, gambling is highly addictive and triggers same brain area as alcohol and drug cravings symptoms. EA is like the Tobacco industry claiming it's not bad for your health o_O

Gambling Addiction Triggers Same Brain Area as Alcohol and Drug Cravings:
https://neurosciencenews.com/gambling-addiction-frontotemporal-lobe-5848/

NBA2K20 took the PEGI 3 abuse a step further and enlisted YouTubers to openly shill for their new casino. Watch this:

So far Belgium is the only western country that has been very proactive to deal with gambling addictions within the game industry. Perhaps not surprisingly EA was the only big publisher to challenge Belgium gambling laws (and lost).

As a gamer, I'm not against gambling for adult games such as CS GO (PEGI 18). But the game industry want non-regulated gambling with PEGI 3 games which is insane.

EA Receives Guinness World Record for Most Downvoted Comment in History:
https://www.extremetech.com/gaming/298129-ea-receives-guinness-world-record-for-most-downvoted-comment-in-history
*SNIP*
They weren’t wrong. EA tried to hold the line on these decisions until Disney executives forced the company to pull the loot crate system just hours before launch. Now, the entire event — and EA’s worst-in-class loot box system — are recorded for posterity.
*SNIP*
EA hasn’t stopped trying to argue that its conduct in these events was blameless; the company took substantial heat earlier this year for describing its game mechanisms as ‘Quite ethical surprise mechanics.’ Thus far, neither the public nor legislators investigating whether loot boxes are equivalent to gambling have been willing to buy what the company is selling.

This post was offtopic, but to show that the game industry is not much better than the Tobacco/Casino business.

Take-Two | Borderlands 3 bait and switch marketing?
This is big if true.
Also, it appears that Take-Two used defamation/lies to shut down SupMatto's YouTube channel (Borderlands 3 Leak Scapegoat).
Defamation like this is illegal in many western countries.
Allegedly gamers close to SupMatto claim that Take-Two are planning bait and switch marketing. This follows a growing trend where games such as Fallout 76 and CoD: Black Ops release without MTX/loot box to avoid negative PR/reviews.
Then post-launch after the review cycle they add new predatory MTX/loot boxes.

Thx to Upper Echelon Gamers for doing some investigative journalism into this BL3 mess.

7:55 - Some new info confirm SupMatto did nothing wrong.

Quotes from Upper Echelon Gamers comments:
Sum FãggOtt
Take two is run by idiots. Why would they attack a guy who’s practically giving their game free advertisement?

Sealedinterface
Because they're afraid that the information leaking early will cost them pre-orders once it gets revealed in full. They think the only hype people will have will come from their own official sources, and hype coming from unofficial leaks is costing them money.
Why SupMatto?
They wanted to make an example to drive fear into all BL3 youtubers, and SupMatto was just big enough to make people notice, and just small enough to get crushed without legal resistance.

Enclavefakesoldier
I remember seeing someone comment in one of UEGs videos a few weeks ago who claimed he came from matto's discord. The reason take two axed him is because BL3 will have post launch DLC after the review cycle. Basically pulling what activision did with CTR

OblivionSA
@Enclavefakesoldier I remember seeing this as well. I want to say it was in the comments for YongYea or maybe TheQuartering. They had indicated it was because some of the info he had may have been about their plans to add loot boxes and other monetization to the game right after all the reviews were released. They didn't want that getting out so people would still buy their game thinking it was micro-transaction free as I believe they had promised. Then they can use the games as a service excuse to force an update with all the monetization crammed in without getting any of the bad PR and lost sales from reviews mentioning it up front.

Kelvin
And it was good advertising lol. One game I play did the opposite, they give leaks to the more proeminent youtubers from the community, the lead developer often joins in video streams with them to discuss about the development, and they even hired a programmer that created one of the most used third-party tools for this game.

crazyinsane
Many people covered it. However, they all said the same thing and didn't follow up on it. In fact, Yong is a terrible offender in this regard as he, unironically and unquestioningly, used IGN and Kotaku as a primary source. Nobody bothered trying to reach out to Submatto, his fans, or anyone else involved besides 2k up until now. I'm pretty sure, nobody else has addressed much of the misinformation campaign by 2k as spread by IGN and Inside Gaming. UEG is doing something very unusual by actually looking into the situation more in-depth than any of his contemporaries, who likely won't issue a follow-up to correct widespread misinformation.

Cornelius Dobeneck
In Germany it is a serious crime to openly claim someone committed a crime when he/she did not. In Supmattos case this claim cost him his "job" and he should sue the outlets who said so pointing out that their lies destroyed his live and endangered the well being of his family. Should be interesting. In addition to that this whole thing need to be published more and T2 boycotted. They need us, we do not need them.

Derek Capron
When the dust settles, I genuinely I wish that Supmatto would find the means to file a lawsuit against them as a corp and hell on an individual stand point. This falls under defamation of character and I am sure there is an attorney out there that would find several other avenues to attack at. The reality though is the cost of that would be extensive and the legal battle very arduous. It is a damn shame where this industry has gone, from the once loved and revered aspect that it was to what adulterated abomination it is now.

This photo was posted on the Crackwatch page of BL3, claimed to be taken from a denuvo hacking server.
It could be wrong, but considering what epic has done until this point for money.. I would think twice.

How can... how can they be so stupid and blinded by their own shilling? So many people unable to find the game in the EGS Library and they do not acknowledge it being a real issue:

Either Randy is lying about sales numbers/concurrent players or EGS exclusives had a big victory?

It was revealed a month ago that BL3 use Denuvo (third-party DRM) to prevent piracy.
Many steam gamers consider this malware.

Borderlands 3 will use Denuvo:
https://www.pcgamesn.com/borderlands-3/denuvo
The release of Borderlands 3 is impending, and its PC deployment has brought along no shortage of controversy. It’ll be a timed exclusive to the Epic Games store, and now we know Borderlands 3 will make use of that most derided DRM solution: Denuvo anti-tamper.

In a recent set of store page redesigns, the Epic store’s Borderlands 3 landing has been updated to mention that it “incorporates 3rd-party DRM: Denuvo anti-tamper.” Users on the PC Gaming subreddit quickly noted the addition (via VG247). At a minimum, you can expect this to mean that future Epic store releases with extra DRM will tell you as much on the store page.

Denuvo’s not foolproof, but it has proven effective in keeping many 2019 releases from being torrented for months at a time – though some versions of the software have still been cracked very quickly. The Epic store’s internal, Steam-like DRM is pretty light, and many games will run just fine without the launcher even being installed.

DRM measures are typically most focused on protecting a game from piracy during the early days of its launch. Some triple-A titles have seen fit to remove Denuvo in a patch some time after release, like Hitman 2 and Rage 2.

Instead of piracy some used this trick to play BL3:

I refunded Borderlands 3 and uninstalled it from the Epic Games Store but found its install directory and its executable is still there and I can unfortunately continue to play Borderlands 3 even though it's gone:

Needless to say. This was discovered early in the crackwatch comment section. A lot of people waiting for the crack did just this. Which i think is kinda moronic. Giving randy even more sales to boast about. No way he reports sales and remove all the refunds

PCgamer | Randy Pitchford says Borderlands 3 has twice as many players on PC as Borderlands 2 did:
source Randy: 247,000–249,000 concurrent players
https://www.pcgamer.com/randy-pitchford-says-borderlands-3-has-twice-as-many-players-on-pc-as-borderlands-2-did/
Borderlands 3 launched on September 13, and I don't know about you but my Twitter feed is full of people talking about it (and pictures of dogs, obviously). People having opinions about a game doesn't necessarily translate into people playing it, but according to Gearbox CEO and part-time magician Randy Pitchford, "the launch day peak concurrent players of Borderlands 3 is about *twice-as-high* as the all time peak concurrent players of Borderlands 2."

That's on PC of course. According to Steamcharts, Borderlands 2 peaked at 123,596 players when it launched seven years ago, while SteamDB estimates 124,678 players. Double that would be somewhere in the 247,000–249,000 player range. Which is a lot of people trying to figure out where the general challenges menu is hidden (it's on the map but only if you zoom out to galaxy level), and why pressing F doesn't activate boost in vehicles any more (it's the shift key now, you're welcome).

Pitchford followed up by saying, "Best numbers in Gearbox history! No promises, but we *might* be ready for me to try a SHiFT code test with the Golden Key system tomorrow. If we do, it will probably be a time-limited key."

IMO, if these EGS sales/concurrent players was true Randy would back it up with a credible source.
I think he is lying to impress investors.

Forbes | 'Borderlands 3' Is Not Ready For Prime Time On The Xbox One X And PS4 Pro:

Borderlands 3 has been both praised and blamed for presenting the same combination of too many guns, frantic combat and juvenile humor we’ve seen in previous installments. If you loved the earlier games it’s a case of don’t fix it if it ain’t broken; if you were hoping for something more, it’s a monument to been there, done that. But what about the technical side of the game? Borderlands 2 was a last-gen game and here’s the sequel coming close to the end of the current console generation. After seven years of development does Borderlands 3 take full advantage of the power available in the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro? Digital Foundry took a look and the answer is a clear “No”. Borderlands 3 is a technical disappointment.
