R9 380 - Would you recommend it?

Hi all, I'm considering a GPU upgrade form my current R7 260x. My budget is about 200-220 USD, and within this range I've narrowed down the R9 380 (4GB Asus Strix).

I'm running an i5 4460 with 8 gigs of RAM and I play in 1080p. Currently, with my existing setup, I've set everything to medium, with AA off. I can get decent 70+ FPS most of the time. With the GPU upgrade, I aim to max out COH2 (not necessarily AA - can keep this to low/med).

Is this a reasonable goal? Would you recommend this GPU? Any community members using it? Please share your experiences.

I'm using the R9 380 and I'm very pleased with it. It makes COH2 look amazing. The only drawback I have is that it lags sometimes when I'm streaming but that's more CPU related on my end.

I find it to be the best GPU in that prize range and it won't let you down

You might as well want to wait for polaris or pascal.

The 380 is a rebranded card from 2014. They took the R9 285 and slapped a new label on it. If you cant swing the 390 or 390X then just wait.

Hey Kluge, thanks for the response man. 2 questions for you:

1) What settings do you play COH2 on? And what FPS do you get?
2) Which processor do you have?

Keep in mind that all of the following is whilst streaming

I play the game on the second highest setting and I'm around 40-50 fps (not including the horrible menu fps ofcourse :p )

This is my processor and mobo
Processor : Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 4460 CPU @3.20 GHz
Mobo : Gigabyte Tech Z97X Gaming 3

As I said, the processer does it's job but I'm probably gonna upgrade it anyway.

I have an MSI 4GB R9 380 and i absolutely love it, i have it with an i5 4590 and it runs great.

On Coh 2 i have everything maxxed out (and i mean everything) at 1080p, and on 1v1 i get pretty solid 50-60fps,the problem is in larger team games when late game comes, and Coh 2 wonderful optimization shows up, i get fps drops and usually end with lower framerates (20-30)fps. Never actually tried to lower the graphics because i dont mind playing coh at that framerate.

Other games just run fine and smooth (for example BF4 everything on ultra and never dips below 60fps), even Star Citizen on Arena Commander at very high settings never goes below 45 fps.

I dont thing there is a better card at that price range

Price/performance, it is a terrible buy. Your money is better spent on an ebay 290x. Last gen flagship card is always a better deal than current gen lower tier IMO.

I've always had good luck with Ati/Amd Gpu's.

You can overclock the hell out of them as well.

Best of luck to you.

I saw the r9 380x at a good price at newegg, depends on your location, xfx is good brand, havent had any problems with it (r9 390 user). Compare it to the gtx 960 and I think you'll get more bang for your buck. Cheers

the new cards are supposed to come this summer, so if oyu have the time to wait, do it. even if the new generations are not that good, you will probably get the r9 380 much cheaper then.

other than that the r9 380 is a fine card

there is new line of graphcis cards coming out this summer so id recomend wating for prices to tank even further or maybe pick up one of new cards. from my research id go with sapphire nitro either 380 or 380x varient. what im most likely going ot get unless i get one new cards depends on when moeny frees up or what is best bang for buck as this card would be a stop gap for me in my quest for better cards :P (i have an hd 5770 right now)

Hey man, thanks for your post. The thing is, I'm in Pakistan, and the cost of the higher end graphic cards is AT LEAST a hundred dollars more than it's actual price, due to taxes or whatever. However I have an opportunity right now because someone I know will be visiting from the US next month, so I can just order the card for it's actual price via them. Not sure when this opportunity materializes again, so I'm gonna bank on it.

Just keep in mind to update your gpu drivers as much as you can, I wouldn't recommend sitting out on an upgrade. When Just Cause 3 was launched, I had horrible rendering issues and weird graphic glitches but they got fixed with a driver update. It can sometimes be a bit of a pain in the arse but AMD provides you with good monitoring and optimisation programs -all gpu devs do this but whatever :p - so yeah, don't skip any updates on the card ^^

I've been away from my pc for 3 months, I can't imagine the amount of updates I'm gonna have to install :D

Hey I have this exact card but I am having green screens randomly during some games. you or anyone else know what might be causing this? The temperature seems fine and I have already reinstalled the drivers.
