german production, so it's probably a) bad and b) only available in german. since you have a giant war movie collection, a) is probably not going to bother you. as for b)... you might be able to find it with subtitles, dunno though.

since it was on german free tv, availability on the internet should be good (actually, it should be view-able on the internet on zdf.de (try this link).

For a german production it was actually not too bad. first 2 episodes at least. But still, its just an attempt to clone Band of Brothers with a lower budget.

I am german and I am also a harsh critic of german public television (especially ZDF that did this, not so much ARD and Phoenix the documentary and history channel which are better).

That said it was OK to watch.
Although the selection for the main characters was very biased.

A nurse, a jew fashion desinger, a socialist writer that turns into a monster, a conservative hero officer and a singer/actress all in one group? Really you must be kidding, how clichee is that?

And none in that group was infused by NSDAP ideology, except the nurse at the start but she turned like 20 minutes later. I can also understand the polish criticism when comparing the polish roles which are worse to the german ones who always seem to have an understandable reason when doing bad stuff. Bad, biased writing in those parts. Not the movie it should have been and how it was treated in german public but OK to watch. Because of reasons above i actually found the first part to be the worst and second and third better.

This movie suffers from being produced by ZDF.
CyberianK already mentioned the clichee of characters.
Also the friendship of the 5 is not explained at all. Its just there from the beginning to the end. However the missing explanation also creates a missing understanding of some important scenes, which are needed to explain why some character acted in a extreme situation. The horros of war dont even cant break that deep bond of friendship these 5 people have created somehwere in the past. Its not that the characters are all good and peaceful: The younger brother has no problems to shoot kids, or the nurse to tell the Gestapo about the jewish nurse. However they never treason or hurt each other. Why? because they are friends...
Friendship is explained between characters though (women loves the man, 2 brother ect.), but not for the whole group. Im talking about this so long because the whole movie is based on that (starting in the bar in episode 1 because they are good "friends", meeting in the same bar again in episode 3 because they are good "friend").

This movie was celebrated by media because of its historical accuracy. After playing COH and reading some articles in the wiki, you identify the obvious mistakes fast: MG42 during Operation Barbarossa, T34 with 85mm gun in the year 43, Cars in the towns of germany have no darkened lights in the night, ...)
These things would have been easy to fix, but obviously ZDF didnt care. It works for the mainstream public though.

Also i didnt like the Nazi Officer, which has stupidly one dimensional villain. Would have been much more interesting, why he is acting like that. The Untergang did the Hitler character so well: At the movie start he is acting like a father figure for the young women, being forgiving, and still being in the bunker. Then suddenly he is freaking out when being together with the other generals, just to be the gentle calm guy during dinner time. This gives the character much more depth, showing the horror, this man was.
ZDF just makes it plane: Nazi=super evil, all actions are inhuman; German soldiers=not evil, their actions altered by the war, so you understand they became like that; Jews=always victims and in every movie present as if every second german was jewish, every non nazi tries to hide them from gestapo,...
There are some exceptions though, which raise the quality of this movie to become watchable.

True, but it should have been implemented in the actual movie.
Afaik the story prequel isnt even a movie but a comic.

Which is not a bad goal. But it's actually not the goal of the series..not much at all like band of brothers. Don't tell me I'm the only one that has always wondered at the possibilities of a german mini-series like BoB that stayed away from politics of the war, and focxused soleyl on the bond among men, the losses, the leaders, and the battles with accurate depictions of them. That's BoB, that's not so much "Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter" at all. Overall the mini-series was rather good...I enjoyed it.

Too bad it wasn't prolonged into more parts with more focus on Winter's platoon, combat, and the brotherhood of the soldiers, that would have made it more of an equal to bob, it's not really about the soldiering on and camaraderie, it was a bunch of political statements, love story, and heartbreaking situations. Overall pretty good series, imho. The media reception and discussion in germany has been crap imho though, the focus almost entirely on how evil Opa was, and not the hopeless situation they were put in.
