what is the difference between the LMGs the squad gets and the MGs that support squads get? I can see they have different stats but are the both the same weapon?

What do you mean, they have different stats so the game treats them as different weapon. As for IRL I have no clue if the lmg42 and hmg42 differ except for the tripod and stuff

yes I mean in real life. it seems strange that they are considered "different" weapons because of the stats (the guns are probably the same). But this is probably due to balance. But why call it LMG42 if there is already the MG42? just call it the same thing

it indicates its role mostly. the LMG42 has a bipod so it can be repositioned quickly by advancing infantry, while the HMG42 has a tripod that is less mobile and allows it to engage much longer range targets effectively.

Iirc, the LMG42 was just basically a MG42 without a structural tripod :P
(Though it did have an attached 2leg stand at the front).

Cba arsed to google research the rest. Do yournown homework :D

FYI - in RL they are the same gun. The big difference was the crews and the volume of ammunition they carried.

The Leichtesmaschinengewehr 34/42 was the "default" loadout of the MGXX series; the so called "assault" configuration with a 50 round drum magazine and detachable bipod. Later in the war, someone came up with the brilliant idea of attaching an extra 25 rounds to the wound up ammunition belt, and enlarging the drum; 75 round drum magazines were available on a semi-limited basis.

Contrary to popular belief, you could fire either from the shoulder (http://youtu.be/O5MAg5feoUQ?t=9m); in both cases the LMG was intended to advance along with the other Grenadiere/Panzergrenadiere/Pioniere/other squadmates, thus being no more than ~50m behind those troops at any given time. In the case of Panzergrenadiere, they had an extra LMG within their 10 man unit and eventually adopted a leapfrogging tactic of an LMG per 5 man section--in such cases, the LMGs became SAWs, per se, with troops being perfectly able to use them as oversized assault rifles at ridiculously close ranges.

As for the MG34/42 auf Lafette; this was a spring-loaded tripod that basically reduced all felt recoil to zilch and enabled the use of the MGXX series out to 1500m+ with little effort; scope attachments were available (and, if used, attached to the tripod) to turn these weapons into pseudo MG-sniper rifles. Crews most often served the weapons from boxes of 250 round belts; the myth that German troops ran around with belts of ammunition festooned across their chests like old-style Mexican bandits is utter horse crap (if ammunition was worn this way and became dirty, the extractor in either case of the MGXX series had an alarming propensity to tear through a cartridge, leaving the forward half of it lodged in the barrel of the MG).

The MGXX series could also be served in the bipod configuration with a two man crew using the box-and-250-round-belt feed method.

This does not capture how much better these LMG's are when compared to each other.

That LMG34 is out of this world, son.

you get two DPs with one upgrade though. You can potentially also get two M1919s on a rifle squad. So that graph is a little bit misleading.

The Obersoldaten MG 34 is nearly all of their DPS, without it, they're basically a slightly better Grenadier squad. I assume it's that way so you can't just recrew an MG with Obersoldaten and have it be unflankable. In-fact, even the current 3 Obersoldaten guards have higher DPS than a Conscript Squad, so if the MG 34's DPS was more evenly distributed over the squad, Conscripts would take heavy losses trying to get rid of it.

On the contrary, Obersoltdaten would lose more DPS with each model getting killed.

But good luck with that. I have to attack one obersoldaten with 3 squads in order to prevent any of my squads from getting wiped.
